An inaugural letter from the Windham Republican Town Committee
Windham has always needed a place where neighbors could say what they think out loud.
In the earliest days of New Marblehead, that place was often a public house. Settlers met at the Province Fort when the frontier was dangerous. When the town settled, they met at the taverns and stores along Windham Center Road — Hanson’s Tavern, Webb Tavern, and later the old grocery where people gathered before town meeting. Those rooms were not official chambers. They were the places where ordinary residents talked about taxes, roads, schools, candidates, and the direction of the town.
The newspapers still print letters to the editor. Social media still hosts arguments. Neither is quite the same as a local letter board that belongs to Windham. So the Windham Republican Town Committee is opening The Public House on windhamgop.com: a digital letter-to-the-editor page for residents who want to put their thoughts in writing, and for conservative candidates who want to speak directly to the people they hope to serve.
This page is a community tool, not a substitute for Town Hall. We will post signed letters from Windham residents and from candidates who submit through the WRTC Chair. Publication does not mean the Committee endorses every sentence. It means we believe Windham is stronger when people write plainly, sign their names, and let their neighbors read the argument.
What you can submit
A letter on a town, school, county, state, or national issue that affects Windham
A short essay on local history, civic life, taxes, education, public safety, or town government
A candidate letter introducing yourself, your record, and what you intend to do in office
Keep it readable. A good letter is usually 250 to 750 words. Say what you mean, support it, and stop.
How residents submit a letter
Write your letter in your own words.
Include your full name, Windham street or neighborhood (not a P.O. box alone), and a phone number or email so we can confirm it is yours. We will publish your name and town. We will not publish your phone number.
Email the letter to WRTC Chair Ingrid LeVasseur at ingridlev@proton.me with the subject line: Public House letter.
If you are submitting on behalf of a household or neighborhood group, say so in the first line.
We reserve the right to decline letters that are unsigned, unlawfully threatening, defamatory, or that we cannot verify. We may correct obvious spelling errors. We will not rewrite your argument.
How candidates submit a letter
Conservative candidates who want to reach Windham voters through this page should send their letter to the WRTC Chair at ingridlev@proton.me with the subject line: Public House — candidate letter.
Please include:
The office you are seeking
The date of the election
Your campaign website or contact, if you have one
A signed statement that you wrote the letter or approved it
Candidate letters should introduce the person, not dump a platform catalog. Tell residents who you are, why you are running, and what you will do if they send you to office. One clear letter is better than three slogans.
What this page is for
The Public House exists so Windham residents can be heard in their own words, and so candidates cannot hide behind advertisements alone. Read the letters. Answer them in your own letter if you disagree. Bring the better argument.
The old taverns are gone. The habit does not have to be.
